ABOUT ME

There is diversity in my experience and my approach. Check out the information below to learn how I help real people make real change.

Maya Wilder , counselor therapist dark skin woman with short natural hair, smiling, wearing large frame eyeglasses and black faux leather jacket, resting her forearms on the metal handle of her black walking cane. Large green tree in background.
  • My name is Maya Wilder (she/her/hers) and I am a licensed mental health counselor in the states of New York and Connecticut. I have also worked for many years (and still do on occasion) as a librarian at a university. I love to learn new things and am often found with my nose in a book.

I make great efforts to show up in the world as someone who is creative, thoughtful, inquisitive, and authentic. I am a child of immigrants, a mother with a complex parenting journey, and a person living with chronic illness. I wear many other hats as well and I describe myself as a multi-passionate person!

  • My counseling approach is a blend of Existential Therapy, Drama Therapy, and is IFS informed. This means, we’ll explore the bigger questions and ways to navigate overwhelming and sometimes conflicting thoughts and emotions. And we will use a bit of creativity to help make change!

I encourage authenticity and curiosity in the counseling space, and my aim is to support you as you learn and put into action new skills while growing your sense of awareness, self-acceptance, and agency. I will also acknowledge the many forces and factors that make you an individual.

  • I strive to create a judgment-free zone where I welcome all parts and center you in our counseling relationship. I also understand that therapy requires a safe space. Or at least, a safe enough space since we cannot guarantee agreement on all things. So in an effort towards transparency, I would like to be open in my relationship with some of the communities that often overlap with the populations I serve.

I identify as a member of the BIPoC community, the disabled community, and the neurodivergent community. I identify as an ally of the immigrant community and the LGBTQIA2S+ community. I also champion science, history, credible information, and anti-oppressive practices.

HERE ARE A FEW CORE BELIEFS THAT GUIDE MY WORK AS A CLINICIAN

  • 01 / AUTHENTICITY

I believe that once a person is able to be their most authentic self in as many settings as possible, life becomes sustainable.

  • 02/ EMPOWERMENT

I believe that you already hold everything you need to become the you you’ve been dreaming of. Together, we can create a plan to help realize those dreams.

  • 03/ EXPLORATION

I am here to help you explore emotions, share what I’ve learned, and enthusiastically cheer you on as you reach your goals!
